Hive's user experience could be dramatically improved by keeping "assigned to me", "followed by me", "assigned by me" and "created by me" systematically apart.
In all views we can apply filters to only see actions assigned to us.
In Table View, we can apply the filter "Created by" to only see actions created by us.
In My Actions / List View", we can filter for actions "assigned by me". The list will not include actions assigned by me to myself, which is great.
"Followed by me" should work in the exact same way and only list actions followed by me but not assigned to me.
There is no view which will show us ONLY actions we follow but which are not assigned to us:
In My Actions / List View: When we select “Followed by me” from the dropdown menu, we get a list of all actions assigned to us, which we can also see when we select "To-do", AND of all actions we only follow, but don't have to actually complete ourselves.
Having "assigned to me" and "followed by me" as distinct categories could, in a next step, also be used to dramatically improve the notification panel. As of now, the “all” tab is unnecessarily cluttered. It would be much more helpful to have a tab “followed actions” and “my actions” or "actions assigned to me".
Unnecessary notifications would be stopped in another way too:
New subactions are unfortunately automatically assigned to the parent actions assignee(s).
When an action is reassigned (for good reason), the original assignees remain followers and will keep getting a lot of notifications for the action. When an action creator changes his mind, there is no easy way for the action creator to unfollow for others.
The systematic distinction would be best exploited by having
• the option to not automatically become a follower when you create an action
and
• the option to not automatically become a follower when you are assigned an action
